In 1976, a small group of former Caltrans workers formed the Shellback Golf Club, named after the tavern in Manhattan Beach where they would gather. Shellback now boasts a membership of about 50 golfers. The club plays at various golf courses throughout Southern California, and concludes every season with a 2-day Tournament of Champions which has been held at various locations in California, Arizona, and Mexico.
