Speakers

Geoff Shackelford
Geoff Shackelford is a longtime golf writer and design consultant who has authored ten books. Co-architect of Rustic Canyon Golf Course and consultant on the restoration of several classics, including The Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course, host of the 2023 U.S. Open, he was a longtime contributor to Golf Channel and continues to share his love of history, course design and the professional game via a major championship-focused newsletter, The Quadrilateral. He graduated from Pepperdine University in 1994 where he played on the men’s golf team.
Jorge Badel
American Golf Corp.
Jorge joined American Golf as Community Engagement Director (CED). As CED he will be responsible for managing community relations and contractual requirements associated with community initiatives between American Golf and its landlords. Jorge most recently served as Senior Golf Director for the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. In that role, he and his team oversaw all aspects the County’s 20 golf course system including the complex lease agreements between the County and its various lessees, contract development, compliance, capital projects and community relations. Prior to his County service, he served on the ground level in the golf industry as a general manager and golf professional at public and municipal facilities.He is a Class “A” Member of the PGA of America. In 2022 he was bestowed an Honorary Life Member by the association. He is a Board member for the Southern California Golf Association, Serves on the PGA of America’s A Place to Play committee, the USGA’s Advocacy workgroup and is an SCPGA Advisory Committee member. Jorge believes that we must nurture and continue to build relationships with our guests and non-golfer constituent neighbors as well. Collectively, they allow us to thrive in the industry and collectively we will work together to fend off future economic and political pressures to repurpose our golf courses.
Brian Costello
JMP Golf Design Group
Brian Costello received a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from the University of California at Davis in 1983. Upon graduation, he joined Hargreaves Associates, a renowned planning and landscape architecture firm based in San Francisco. Brian joined JMP in 1989 and became a Principal of the firm in 1994. Some of his noteworthy designs and renovations are Callippe Preserve GC, Los Lagos GC and Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club.
Kevin Fitzgerald
SCGA
Kevin works to expand the department’s full array of advocacy services to the Association’s member clubs, members and facilities along with various allied associations and partners. A 2011 graduate of UC Riverside with a degree in Political Science, Kevin racked up an impressive competitive record while playing golf for the men’s team. He’s also an SCGA veteran, posting a top-5 finish in the 2012 SCGA Amateur Championship. Most recently, Kevin worked in the sales department for Cleveland/Srixon. In his new role he will focus on the SCGA’s work in water, environment, regulation, legislation and the issues specific to the game’s municipal sector. He will also begin to take much of the work already performed in these areas and organize it for long-term knowledge management.
Jordan Gilmore
CGCS, San Clemente Municipal Golf Course
Jordan Gilmore is currently a Golf Course Manager at City of San Clemente. Jordan brings experience from previous roles at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, Monarch Beach Golf Links, The Riviera Country Club and Merion Golf Club. He also holds a 2006 - 2010 Bachelor of Applied Science - BASc in Turf and Turfgrass Management from Olds College.
Jeff Arnold
National Links Trust
Jeff Arnold is the Director of Communications at the National Links Trust. He previously worked in Marketing and Communications at BostonSight and the New England Center for Children. Jeff received a Bachelor of Arts from Assumption College and wrote his thesis "Revitalizing the Municipal Model: A Case Study of Winter Park Golf Courses."
Jon Christenson
Golf Maintenance, JC Resorts
Jon Christenson is the Corporate Director of Golf Maintenance at JC Resorts. Jon brought over thirty-two years of valued experiences to his position at JC Resorts from the roles of Vice President of Agronomy, Regional Agronomist, General Manager and Golf Course Superintendent in multiple regions across the country.
Lee Finkel
CourseCo
Lee currently serves as the Vice President of Operations for CourseCo. Lee joined the company in 2020 as the Vice President of Revenue Management and was promoted to VP of Operations in 2022. In his current role, Lee assists in overseeing the day-to-day operations of golf course operations, revenue management and development of key team members.
Chris Gilfillen
Touchstone Golf
Chris Gilfillen started his career as a cart attendant at Eastlake Country Club in 1993. Upon graduation from San Diego State University in 2001, he became the General Manager for Balboa Park Golf Course. He later served as the General Manager of Mission Trails Golf Course, Eastlake Country Club, Chula Vista Golf Course, and is now based at Riverwalk Golf Course as Touchstone’s Regional Manager for the San Diego Area. In addition to operational oversight, Mr. Gilfillen is responsible for the development of the managers for Riverwalk, Chula Vista and Rancho Carlsbad. A proven executive leader, Mr. Gilfillen has expertise in golf operations marketing, food and beverage, catering sales, membership, merchandising and course maintenance.

PGA of America
Junko Harkins, PGA is the Player Engagement Consultant and Member/Section Ops West for the Souther California Section at PGA of America.

Josh Heptig
County of San Luis Obispo
Josh Heptig is the current Director of Golf Operations for the County of San Luis Obispo. He has been in this position for the last 17 years. Before this position, Josh spent six years as the Golf Course Superintendent at numerous courses.
Vincent Johnson
LA County Parks
Vincent Johnson is the LA County Parks Golf Director. In this role, he oversees 20 golf courses at 18 different sites – the nation’s largest public golf course system. Vincent is a former professional player and most recently served as Golf Director for Portland Parks and Recreation.
Marc Lilleberg
American Golf Corp.
Marc Lilliberg is the current Regional Golf Course Superintendent with American Golf Corporation and has been with the corporation for five years.
Jorge Mendoza
Green River GC
Jorge Mendoza is the Golf Course Superintendent at Green River GC. Jorge was named the Innovative Conservation Award winner by CourseCo at the 2025 GCSAA Convention and Trade Show.
Jeff Jensen
GCSAA
Jeff Jensen is the Southwest regional representative of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Prior to joining the GCSAA staff, Jeff spent more than a decade in the golf industry in management and marketing.
Craig Kessler
California Alliance for Golf
Craig Kessler is the Executive Director of the California Alliance for Golf (CAG), where he leads statewide efforts to protect and promote the game’s interests across public policy, land use, and environmental issues. Before stepping into this role, Craig spent over 13 years as the Southern California Golf Association’s Director of Governmental/Public Affairs, establishing the SCGA as a powerful voice for golf at the state and local levels.Craig joined the SCGA in 2011 following his tenure as Executive Director of the Public Links Golf Association (PLGA), where he played a central role in facilitating the merger between the SCGA and PLGA. That merger sparked the creation of the SCGA’s Governmental Affairs department, which Craig built from the ground up and led for more than a decade. During that time, he spearheaded countless advocacy campaigns that delivered meaningful wins for golfers, the industry workforce, and the future of the game.His efforts have been instrumental in preserving golf facilities, most notably in saving holes at public courses throughout Southern California—including a high-profile effort in Los Angeles' Sepulveda Basin. Craig is also a trusted collaborator with national and regional organizations such as the USGA, SCPGA, NCGA, GCSAA, NGCOA, and, of course, CAG, where he continues to drive collective action for the good of the game.
Azucena Maldonado
Latina Golfers Association
Azucena Maldonado founded the Latina Golfers Association (LGA) in 2008 to introduce Women of all ages to golf for their professional development, personal enjoyment, and to promote a healthy lifestyle. The LGA teaches women how to utilize golf as a business tool so they can advance in their careers/businesses and shatter the glass ceiling with a golf ball.

Damian Pascuzzo
Pascuzzo Pate Golf Design
Damian Pascuzzo began his career working with famed designer Robert Muir Graves. In 1991 he became the principal designer and partnered with Graves to form Graves & Pascuzzo. He has worked on a broad range of projects from residential and resort developments, to master planning and remodeling existing courses. In 2001 he was elected President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Later in 2006, longtime veteran of the PGA Tour, Steve Pate joined with Damian to form Pascuzzo & Pate Golf Course Design.
Tom Son
Arrowood Golf Course
Tom is the General Manager (GM) of Arrowood Golf Course. Before Tom became the GM in January 2018, he worked in the Investment Banking Industry as a Managing Director in Hong Kong and Korea from 1999 to 2016. Tom also served in the United States Army from 1994 to 1999, resigning as a Captain. Prior to his commission in the Army, Tom graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1994, graduated (Valedictorian) from Golf Academy of America (San Diego campus) in 2017 and became a PGA Member / CMAA Member in 2019. Tom is currently on the Board of Directors for SCPGA Section and San Diego Chapter. Tom, who is truly passionate about golf and is very excited to be at Arrowood, says “I will lead to make a positive impact at Arrowood so the guests’ experience will be one to remember.” He looks forward to meeting everyone in person and wishes everyone to have an excellent experience at Arrowood Golf Course.
Jim Richerson
The Riviera Country Club
Richerson, who has 34 years of experience working in golf, was with Troon for five years, where he was Senior Vice-President of Operations. Before that, he was the general manager for Kohler Co. in Wisconsin where he ran the facilities at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run as well as The Duke’s Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. The former PGA of America President was named General Manager of The Riviera Country Club & The Riviera Tennis Club in 2022.
Andrew Szunyog
National Links Trust
Andrew Szunyog is a sustainability strategist and community builder with a background in tournament administration and golf course operations. He's the Co-Founder of Driving the Green, a golf sustainability website dedicated to building a more sustainable, equitable and prosperous golf and sports industry. Andrew received a B.A. from the University of Florida and an M.B.A. from George Washington University.
